Liesbeek Maintenance Team
The Liesbeek Maintenance Project (LMP) has been operational since 2004. Initially focused primarily on litter collection, the LMP has grown both in terms of the scope of work conducted and in relation to the number of staff it employs. The LMP now primarily focuses on alien and invasive species management, ecological restoration projects, trail and pathway maintenance, plant propagation and litter collection.
Currently the team includes 11 staff members, including three females and all classified as youth and from previous disadvantaged communities. Through their involvement with the LMP, they are gaining the skills and experience necessary to further their careers and improve their own personal circumstances. For instance, through the LMP, one team member has obtained his driver’s license and saved enough money to buy his own car- a significant personal achievement.
Previously, through the entire LMP team received a NQF level 2 Environmental Practices qualification in addition to other training such as Level1 First Aid, Health and Safety, Herbicide Application Snake Handling and Brush Cutter training.
The establishment of the Liesbeek Learning Programme (LLP) has led to an annual internship opportunity; a partnership between the FoL, Omni HR Consulting and the ABAX Foundation. The LLP now provides opportunities for four individuals to receive practical (3 days a week) and academic (2 days a week) environmental NQF level 2 Environmental Practices training inclusive of a stipend.
