What do you love about the Liesbeek?
It’s brimming with potential. The diversity of wildlife that has been recorded along the river is a testament to this. It’s viewed as degraded but in spite of this it can still provide habitat to so many charismatic urban species. If it were further rehabilitated one can only imagine the immense ecological value it would provide.
Relevance (value) to FoL?
I’m an urban ecologist and conservationist and have done published research on the river’s avifauna.
What is your vision for the liesbeek?
- For people to start viewing it as a functioning ecosystem
- Some degree of riparian habitat all along the river
- Some canalised sections being converted, or at least partially so to reconnect with the ground
- Less pollution
