Newsletter 2/07 – April 2007

Dear Friends

Thanks to Trevor Hughes (our public relations committee member), our website is finally starting to grow. We want to use the website and emailing list to you keep informed and interested in what the committee is doing and how you can become more involved. Please visit the website (www.fol.org.za) and offer suggestions and offer some photographs / articles on your encounters with the Liesbeek.

However, we also realize that electronic information is not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s still good and it’s “okay” to receive a newsletter on paper. For many, receiving such information in the post is becoming a novelty! We will continue to mail newsletters to all who would prefer to get information in this way.

River Walk on Human Rights Day

We had a good turn out of members and visitors to walk the Liesbeek. The weather was perfect together with the good company of people who enjoyed chatting along way. The walk was punctuated with information, comments and observations from all. A special thanks to Liz Wheeler who kept us well informed of developments and issues along the river.

This walk serves an excellent purpose of seeing the river from start to finish. We saw that many parts of the river need lots of attention, but it is also so refreshing to come across parts in Bishopscourt, Newlands and Rondebosch where the river and its surroundings are pleasing. There is no doubt that some of these places would look very different were it not for the fantastic work that it being done by the River Maintenance Project.

The champagne, eats and refreshments under trees outside the Wild Fig added a delightful new innovation to the walk.

Death of Belinda Grewe

We will greatly miss Belinda Grewe who passed away on the 24th March. She was such a faithful member of the Friends committee for over 5 years. We will remember her for her strong feelings and opinions about to conservation, and she worked tirelessly on so many hacks to remove alien vegetation and plant outs. Moreover she kept the Enviro Centre at Valkenberg in running order.

Her walk down the Liesbeek on Human Rights Day was the last of occasion she had to see the river in which she had a deep interest.

We are urgently seeking volunteers from our membership who might be interested to serve as treasurer and as a committee member (portfolio to be determined) on the new committee.
