SAB Newlands will be organising and hosting a fun run or “dash” this Saturday the 17 March, to help raise funds for the work being carried out by the Friends of the Liesbeek. The South African Breweries has been instrumental in funding the start up operations of the Liesbeek Maintenance Project and their continued support has allowed the project to grow to the success it is today.

A warm invitation to attend our
FRIENDS GROUP WORKSHOP:

Saturday 12 November, 10h00 – 13h00

The Friends of the Liesbeek will be leading our November Friends Group Workshop in celebration of their 20th anniversary! This ‘workshop with a difference’ will begin with a slow and gentle walk-and-talk along the beautiful upper reaches of the Liesbeek River down to Paradise Park in Hiddingh/Newlands, visiting the riverine park managed by Joan Parker from the Bishopscourt Village Residents Association en route.

With input from Friends, some topics for possible discussion along the way are:

* Management of urban wetlands and rivers
* Invasive vegetation
* Dealing with inappropriate urban development
* Some interesting snippets about the Liesbeek

Suggestions for other topics are welcome!

The walk will be followed by an early picnic lunch in the arboretum beneath the stone cottages from 12h00 to 13h00 during which time Friends can share news, discuss other topics, and network. You are welcome to stay on thereafter to network further and to explore the area.

Notes:

Meet in the small car park on Winchester Avenue at 10h00.
Directions: From the M3, turn onto Rhodes Drive and travel towards Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Near the entrance to Kirstenbosch, turn into Kirstenbosch Drive at the Stone Cottages and Church of the Good Shepherd. Turn first right into Winchester Avenue.

In the event of rain, please do still meet in Winchester Avenue and we will proceed as a group to the nearby Kirstenbosch Lion’s Club Hall and ’workshop’ there.

Bring along walking shoes, a hat, a windproof jacket, a liquid refreshment and a picnic lunch.

Return transport will be available back up to the car park for drivers and those needing it.

20th Birthday Celebration

Dear Friends,

After a dry winter we wonder what spring and summer have in store for us! Perhaps all of us should look again at being waterwise in our homes and gardens. However, we still can enjoy the display nature puts on - see the lovely photos of flowering plants to be found in our area in the latest newsletter September 2011 Newsletter.

IMPORTANT!!! This year we are celebrating the 20^th anniversary of the Friends of the Liesbeek and we are very proud to belong to such an active environmental organization. To celebrate the occasion we would like to ask all members and interested persons to contribute photographs, poems, newspaper articles or anecdotes – be creative! Please let us have your contributions before the end of October so that we can set up a display on the anniversary of the founding meeting of FOL,

What the Friends of the Liesbeek have learnt over 20 years

This slide presentation was given by Kevin Winter at a public meeting to launch the Black and Vygekraal River Friends / Action group. What the Friends of Liesbeek have learnt over 20 years (file about 6.5Mbs!) It summarises some important lessons that shape the approach the Friends of the Liesbeek have taken over the years since the organisation was founded on the 28th November 1991. This approach is working well for the FoL, but the presentation was not intended to suggest that this is what the B and V Friends need to follow. Maybe they will need to form an Action Group rather than a Friends? The condition the Black River is serious – maybe a more radical approach is necessary. Kevin Winter

WATER WEEK

FOL WATER WEEK WALK TO NEWLANDS SPRING

Join us on Wednesday 23^rd March on a walk along the Liesbeek to the Newlands Spring as part of our activities during Water Week. We will meet at 18h00 in front of Josephine Mill in Newlands and walk as a group to the spring. The walk will take approximately 30 minutes.

Bring along an empty container to collect water for tasting and testing.

We will also be searching for a geo-caching point.

Afterwards you are welcome to join us at Barrister’s. Transport back to Josephine Mill can be organized.

Few people know about the springs that flow into the Liesbeek. The Albion Spring used to supply the Schweppes factory.

Friends welcome Mike Tanner from Wisconsin

The Friends will again benefit from the Global Environmental Ambassador program (GEM), an initiative of the University of Wisconsin. Mike Tanner, a major in Ecology and Public Administration, will be working on various projects for the Liesbeek including signage proposals and content; rehabilitation plans for the Valkenburg wetland; and assessing the habitat of the Liesbeek. We are grateful for the support we have had from GEM students in the past and look forward to making progress on various initiatives over the next two months with Mike.

Raising awareness about Cape Town’s rivers

This is an adventure that no one else has done or at least in recent times using Cape Town’s waterways as the route. Kevin Winter (current Chair of the Friends) is kayaking from False Bay to Table Bay on 23 May together with 3 other wildcats. The idea is to raise awareness about the state of Cape Town’s rivers. A film and media crew will accompany the team. Various environmental groups will meet the paddlers along the way to talk about rivers and to take some water samples. See the proposed route map attached. More details to follow.

FOL joins the WordPress revolution

After having served us very well for over 2 and half years, out little old blogging platform FlatPress has been replaced by Shiny New WordPress install. Its taken me the better part of today to perform the upgrade and its still not 100 percent complete.

I have to customize the theme a bit and create categories and then categorize the existing posts. I have also to add some static Pages namely About, Contact us and Join Us for a start.

With WordPress comes a much more advanced system of managing the website and cutting out all that comment spam that plagued the old site.

Our OtterSpotter blog will continue to operate as it has – http://otterspotter.fol.org.za until I also port it over to WordPress in the near future.

The WordPress platform will also make it easier to collaborate via multiple authors and the comments system

I look forward to taking the Friends web site forward and hope you all enjoy the new look.
